Should Baker Mayfield Win The Heisman?

Baker Mayfield is a strong favorite to win the Heisman trophy after displaying dominating performances this season. This young man has thrown 300 yards in 8 games. He has led his team to a 10-1 season, but numbers alone shouldn’t give a star athlete the right to disrespect their school and fans nation wide. Baker Mayfield has had a history of red flags like public intoxication getting arrested and planting a flag this year on Ohio State field after beating them in an upset. The Heisman hopeful comes with a lot of baggage and the NFL scouts are watching him with a close eye. If he continues to show poor character he will be a serious concern for NFL teams but make no mistake about it this guy is a top player in college football right now. I still expect for him to win the final votes when they come out but time and time again his privileges and entitlement are abused. The Heisman trophy is the most prestigious award in college football and should go to a college player that has super star numbers and good character with a winning mindset.

These power house football programs like Oklahoma do their best to cover up embarrassment like a Baker Mayfield. Sport college athletics helps finance schools and for some schools get hundreds of thousands sometimes millions of dollars depending on how big the bowl game. This money gets divided and shared to different people including the president and coaches. Athletes like Baker Mayfield get a pass because he is a great football player and schools will give full scholarships and sometimes money under the table if they have special talent. Do you want a player leading your NFL team who is not dependable? He got in some more recent trouble when he was seen in a game grabbing his crotch and screaming at the opposing team fans and players. This guy will probably end up being a 1st round pick but I would not draft him. In my opinion I feel like he will be a bust in the NFL. A team like the New York Giants could draft him but he will be nothing more than a back up. A team would be crazy to draft him high with their pick.

Nice we will see what he does in the pros

  2. Jean Cucchi says:

    Good piece……
    he reminds me of Manziel😳

  3. Jacquez says:

Baker is a great collegiate player but he may slip into the 2nd or 3rd round because of his antics on and off the field

  4. Vincent Witel says:

I agree with this article however if Jameis Winston was able to win the award with all of his character issues, I doubt Mayfield’s character issues will be a factor when it comes to voting in most minds, I’m sure there are a few who will use it by that’s still a small percentage of voters. I personally wouldn’t vote for him for Heisman because I think Sequon Barkley from Penn State is more deserving. Now I would add Manziel’s character issues but his issues didn’t come up until the Summer after he won the Heisman, then progressively got worse when he went to the NFL. I see Mayfield heading in that direction. Anyway another great blog, keep up the great the work.

Vincent thank you for your feed back and support. I do feel he was the best football player of the season. I would not draft baker mayfield in the first 2 rounds.

  5. Jalie says:

I would love for him to win it! I get the whole thing of stuff he has done and gotten into but I think people need to take a step back and realize he is still a young college student and they do stuff he is human. Keeping people on pedestals and going crazy over stuff he has done is crap. If being in his shoes and age no one can say they wouldn’t have done some of that stuff. I would love to see what he can do in NFL!

I’ll paste this here from my post at Facebook: You wouldn’t give Baker at least a shot in the NFL ? I wouldn’t spend a high draft pick on him but I’d give him a chance at QB and if he’s not up to being an NFL QB I’d make him a Wes Welker kind of player if his ego is not too large. He might be a Tim Tebow or he might be a Russell Wilson but I think he deserves a chance. Looks like the Browns will pick first so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to go #1. As for his shenanigans……these are just kids. Remember how we were at 21?

  7. Jacquez says:

Baker Mayfield won’t be picked over josh Rosen, Sam darnold, or possibly Lamar Jackson so if he ends up going late 1st round he’ll likely start his career off on the bench

  8. Chandler says:

He’s pretty much got it clutched. He deserves it. As far as how his antics (however much they disgust me) will affect his draft potential…well players have gone first round after committing actual crimes so I think it’s a non factor. The league will humble him FAST and I think he will be a bust.

  9. Gerald Romain Jr says:

He is talented and yes the most outstanding player this year but I am more upset about the voting system as they tally the votes instead of whom ever has the most first place votes is the winner it’s crazy great article and yes he was wrong for what he did and yes he plays in a weak conference but he will win

  10. Marc says:

What do you think of Baker now ? I watched him carve up the TCU defense. He made several NFL level throws and his arm strength and accuracy should earn him a place on some team’s roster. The only question is can he throw over larger NFL lines ? Ask Drew Brees who is an inch shorter how it’s worked for him. I’m no fan of Oklahoma having grown up in Ohio but I’ll take take Mayfield’s leadership and spirit on my team any day.

  11. Marc says:

You wouldn’t even take a chance on him in the second round ? Someone who knows a lot more about this stuff than I do predicts him to go 26th overall to the Saints which would be a perfect fit for Mayfield. To learn from Drew Brees who understands the challenges of not being a tall QB would be great for Baker. Hard to tell, he could be a bust like Tebow or an elite QB like Russell Wilson. I’d roll the dice.

Marc I feel he will go in the top 10 or even top 5. He wont last after the first 10 picks. Thank you for your comments and support.
